Flushing Toilets Only Weeks Away

Talkeetna’s Village Park will soon have flushing toilets with running water, just in time for the influx of tourists.

Brian Robison with Mat-Su Borough Parks says the contractor and Borough project management are finishing the last bits of installation before they open for public use. Robison says there isn’t a specific opening date, but he expects it to be complete in the next few weeks.

The toilets now have power and the building is connected to water and sewer. There are still a few outstanding tasks before opening to the public. The old pit toilets will remain open until everything is functional.

After being run over this winter, the power to the bandshell is still out. Those repairs will be addressed when the ground defrosts. Landscaping remediation will begin immediately, guided by community input received last fall.

The old pit toilets will eventually be relocated to the Whigmi Trailhead parking area. Robison says there is money allocated for the relocation and installation. Whigmi Trailhead sees more traffic per year than the Comsat Trailhead. Robison says it’s because there are multi-use trails, Nordic ski trail access, and access to several other lakes. There also are lots of special events that happen on those trails. Based on feedback from the public, Robison says the Borough is looking to potentially expand the parking area.

Once the Village Park toilets are open to the public, the pit toilets will be hauled out.
