In early September, the Mat-Su Borough School Board began a no phone pilot program at three schools: Palmer Junior Middle School, Palmer High School, and Su-Valley High School. While each school implements the program slightly differently, they all prohibit students from accessing their phones during the school day.
The pilot program was initially planned to be one year long, but School Board Superintendent Dr. Randy Trani claimed they have seen enough three months in.
At the School Board’s December 18th meeting, Dr. Trani said teachers are reporting students pay more attention in class, talk with each other more, and have fewer disciplinary actions with the new policy.
Dr. Trani wants to implement the no phone policy districtwide. He will introduce the idea formally at the next School Board Meeting January 15th.
