Borough Waives Application Fees for Skate Park

At their meeting last week, the Mat-Su Borough Assembly voted to waive the application and land use fee for a Borough-owned site to be used for the Talkeetna Skatepark.

Located at the old Talkeetna Library site at about mile 13.5 on the Spur Road, the Skatepark has been planned for a number of years.

The community renewed its interest in building the park last year. Through the Talkeetna Community Council, the Skatepark Committee submitted to the Assembly a conceptual design and summary proposal to build on the lot.

According to Skatepark Committee Chair Caitlin Palmer, the group is requesting a long-term land use agreement. This is with the understanding that the park must adhere to the Special Use District requirements, floodplain requirements, and must address minimal contamination issues at the site.

The group hopes the Borough will provide some regular support, like trash service and seasonal toilets. But, the Skatepark Committee will provide maintenance of the park’s features.

The group has now completed preliminary design work, community engagement, and received some donor support. Estimated to cost up to $350,000, the group has already raised about $14,000 of that. Their goal is to have the skatepark operational by this summer if they are able to raise the funds.
