In the Mat-Su Borough School District, around 5,000 students are enrolled in correspondence schools. For each of those students, families can receive $3,000 each year as allotments. These allotment funds are meant to allow families who homeschool to pay for things necessary for education like textbooks, materials, internet, and more. However, a recent lawsuit claimed that is not all these funds are being used for.
In the lawsuit filed February 6th, some parents and educators alleged that allotments are being used to offset costs for private school tuition, which the lawsuit argued is unconstitutional. The lawsuit named four Alaskan school districts: Anchorage, Mat-Su Borough, Denali Borough and Galena City. While the specific amount of allotment money spent on private school tuition is unclear, the plaintiffs’ attorney said it will be revealed in court.
The Mat-Su Borough School district declined to comment on the ongoing litigation at this time.
