On January 27th, the Alaskan House of Representatives voted to approve House Joint Resolution 4. The resolution “respectfully urges” President Trump to reverse his executive order renaming Denali, Mt. McKinley.
The initial vote was 28-10 in favor of the resolution, but Big Lakes Representative, Kevin McCabe moved for reconsideration. Representative McCabe initially voted against the resolution, but said he needed more time to consider.
“I really need to check with my district and see what the district feels like,” he said, “Because after all, I represent the whole district, not just my views.”
Reconsideration brings the bill or resolution back to the floor as if it had not been debated in the first place, something Representative McCabe said gave him time to speak with those he represents.
In the final vote, Representative McCabe and one other representative changed their position, voting in favor of the resolution.
With a final tally of 31-8 in favor, the resolution advances to the Senate.
