Trapper Creek Community Council Seeks Approval to Increase Board Quorum

Since a change to the bylaws in July of 2023, the Trapper Creek Community Council has had seven board members. But the Board did not vote to increase the quorum. They had been operating since the change in bylaws as though the quorum was five.

The last few Council meetings have been sometimes contentious around the discussion of the potential violation of bylaws. Board Chair Jason Kresge noted at this week’s meeting they failed to notify the public of the change to quorum requirements.

In June 2023, the Board collected more than the required 10 signatures to hold a general membership meeting to change the bylaws. Board members also posted the notice for 30 days at the Trapper Creek Public Library and the Post Office, as required.

The July 2023 meeting was standing room only, but not because of the bylaws discussion. There had been two women murdered in Trapper Creek and Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner James Cockrell, as well as several Alaska State Troopers attended to hear the community’s concerns. The Board membership was changed from five to seven at that meeting.

The Council will post the proposed quorum changes to the bylaws at the Library and Post Office on February 22nd. To meet the 30-day requirement without extending another month, the Council voted to hold their general membership and board meeting one week later than usual on March 27th. The public is invited to participate.
