More than thirty protesters gathered outside the Talkeetna post office Saturday morning, carrying homemade signs and a large banner emblazoned with the words “Hands Off.” Demonstrators marched up and down Main Street before gathering beside the railroad tracks, where they held their signs up for passengers on the train to see.
Their protest joins over 1,400 protests nationwide coordinated to voice opposition to President Trump, his administration, and Elon Musk.
Long-time Talkeetna resident Sarah Birdsall heard about the Nationwide “Hands Off” protests and decided the community needed a way to get involved a little closer to home.
“A lot of people are worried about what’s happening or what’s going to happen,” she said, “and I just felt Talkeetna should have a say.”
The nationwide protests were an effort to speak out against many actions taken by President Trump and his administration, including federal budget cuts, major layoffs, tariffs, and more. With all of these contributing factors, Talkeetna resident Josh Klauder said it can be difficult to know where to begin.
“It’s almost like where do we even start, but we’re losing our democracy, and we’re doing whatever we can,” he said.
According to Klauder and others present, the protest gave them a platform to make their voices heard.
