In an email to the Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce dated July 9th, the Mat-Su Borough rejected the proposal for closing Main Street to vehicles one day of the week.
The proposed pedestrian-only Saturdays would have closed Main Street to vehicles on Saturdays from July 19th through August 30th. The Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce introduced this plan at the Talkeetna Community Council on July 7th. The chamber says they had been in communication with the Borough about the plan and received an email in June initially approving the proposal.
However, Deputy Borough Manager George Hays sent an email to the chamber saying that, due to “numerous comments and complaints” following the proposal’s introduction at the recent Talkeetna Community Council meeting, the borough could not approve closing down Main Street.
Hays said that a proposal could be reconsidered next year, but it would need input from the Community Council, the Chamber, the Road Service Area, business owners on Main Street, and other business owners throughout downtown Talkeetna.
