Many organizations depend on Recreational Trails Program funding through the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, each year. But DNR initially limited the funding to only State Park lands for this fiscal year. Each state can determine how it wants to spend the federal pass-thru dollars.
Support from the public, with pressure from Governor Mike Dunleavy and other elected officials, led the DNR to reverse that decision, according to a notice from State Representative Kevin McCabe. Municipalities, native corporations, tribal governments, and non-profit organizations can apply for funding to support trail projects on public lands, as they have in the past.
Fuel taxes from off-road vehicles help to fund the RTP program. About $1.5 million is approved for this fiscal year. Motorized and non-motorized trail projects will each get 30% of the funds, while non-motorized diversified trail projects will receive 40% of the funds.
The maximum grant for organizations is $300,000 for motorized and $200,000 for non-motorized and non-motorized diversified trail projects. The RTP program can support up to 90% of the project’s budget with a 10% match from organizations. Past projects include trail improvements, parking lot repairs, snow grooming equipment, and education and outreach.
According to the DNR website, applications are due October 31st.
