Masek pleads guilty

Former State Representative Bev Masek  has agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to receive a bribe.

Masek was the Mat Su area Representative from Willow from 1995 to 2004 and has been accused by the Justice Department of accepting at least 4 thousand dollars from former Veco CEO, Bill Allen.

The charges state that she stopped an oil tax bill she introduced after Allen told her it was harmful to his oil industry clients.

Masek faces a prison sentence of one to 2 years and a fine of $4000 to $40,000.

This makes the sixth conviction of a lawmaker and the 11th overall obtained in the FBI’s investigation of corruption in Alaska.  The charge names Masek, Allen and Veco vice-president Rick Smith as co-conspirators.  Allen and Smith have pleaded guilty to bribery, conspiracy and tax charges.  They have not been sentenced.

John Cowdery  was the latest lawmaker to be sentenced.  Cowdery, 79, received six months of home confinement and a fine of $25,ooo.
