Seniors get help with roof repair

The Upper Susitna Seniors organization received relief in the form of a housing grant to assist them in fixing a yearly safety issue.

For years, the non profit organization has had an issue with roof safety in the winter time.   The housing  has had an ice build up problem from the beginning as a result of how the roof was constructed and the back doors in the middle of winter had become unusable.  They have never been able to raise funds to reconstruct the roof eaves.

This past month, the seniors received a grant from the Anchorage Home Builders Association to fix the roof.  The association awards grants for building projects that are in need of funding and look specifically at safety issues.  Normally, they would not have funded a project outside the Anchorage area, but saw this as a special case.

The grant paid for building materials and senior Joe Heck gathered volunteers to do the labor.  According to Gail Schumacher the housing units are now safer and even better to look at, and the back egress is now usable.  Joe Heck, Clarence Wells, Orville and Paddy Grosz, Norwood Marsh and Charlie Osha performed all the work last week.  Ann Heck, Sue Osha and Carol Young made sure the hungry workers were fed.
