Susitna Council to start trail planning

The Susitna Community Council is moving on winter trail planning.  The council accepted the trail committee’s mission statement and objectives at the council’s regular meeting on Thursday evening.  The committee is starting on area trails, including what committee chairman Justin Koles called the Yoder Road trail and connecting Yoder Road with Sheep Creek trail.  They will work on making all trails legal and work will focus on winter trails only.  At an earlier meeting, the idea of working on a trail to connect trails from Willow northward on the east side of the highway was discussed.

The council is going forward with their 501 c 3 status and voted to join as a partner with the Foraker Group as well as complete the paperwork for the Alaska State Charitable Organizations.  All federal, state and borough licensing as well as memberships and the non profit status will cost the council about one thousand dollars.  Treasurer Feenie Miller says the funds will all come from monies previously collected.

The council will be asking the Borough to put the Sunshine Creek Road on the CIP nomination list.  Although the Creek itself has been cleaned up and outhouse installed to help with sanitation issues, the road itself is in poor shape.

The council also gave the nod to Art Peterson to subdivide a large ag parcel into 4-forty acre lots.  The council was in favor of the Borough’s variance as long as the large parcels stay agricultural.

The council seated resident Vonda Baker to take the place of Blaine Humphries, who recently resigned from the board.  She’ll take over the secretarial duties.
