The Susitna and Talkeetna Community Councils have publicized more than $25,000 in grants through the Community Assistance Program. CAP funds are allocated in the state budget, then pass through the Mat-Su Borough, which allocates an amount to each eligible community council. Each year, funding the program for the following fiscal year is one of the negotiating points in the state’s budget process.
The largest recipients for the current grant cycle were Upper Susitna Seniors, Inc, which received $8,000 in funding and the Upper Susitna Food Pantry, which received about $6,500. The food pantry grants were split fairly evenly between Talkeetna and Susitna, whereas nearly all of the Upper Susitna Seniors grants came from the Susitna Community Council.
Other grant recipients include KTNA, Sunshine Station Childcare Center, the Talkeetna Historical Society, Susitna Neighborhood Watch, Talkeetna CERT, Meals on Wheels, Denali Education Center, and the Talkeetna Elementary PTA.
