News Producer Job Description
The News Producer investigates, writes, and produces local news stories on a wide range of issues relevant to the Upper Susitna Valley. This position produces multiple news stories for broadcast each week, hosts newscasts, and posts content to the station’s website and social media platforms. The producer assists with existing public affairs programming and may work with the news team and volunteers to develop other public affairs programs. During local emergencies, the producer assists with updating local residents through KTNA’s broadcast, website, and social media presence. The News Producer reports to the General Manager and works as part of a news team of staff, freelance reporters, and interns.
Position type: Full-time, non-exempt.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reporting: The News Producer investigates, writes, and produces local news for broadcast on KTNA and posting on the KTNA web site and appropriate social media platforms. This position is general assignment reporting and responsible for ensuring coverage of local government meetings, community events, and important community and regional issues. The producer conducts interviews and field reporting as needed. The producer produces at least one story per weekday.
- On Air Hosting: The News Producer delivers KTNA newscasts at least once a week and coordinates with other staff to fill in when volunteer news readers are unavailable.
- Oversee News and Public Affairs Programming: The News Producer is the direct supervisor of the news and public affairs production staff.
- Oversee Community Journalism Program: KTNA has recently started a new program to get interested volunteers involved in producing news content. The News Producer will provide editorial oversight of those volunteers.
- State and National News: The News Producer contributes local news of regional, statewide, or national interest to Alaska Public Media, National Public Radio, or any other appropriate public media entity and collaborates with Alaska reporters to cover stories that affect communities across the state.
- Emergencies: The News Producer leads the station’s crisis response coverage to ensure that KTNA is updating local residents through its broadcast, website, and social media presence.
- Other duties as assigned: The News Producer participates in station events and fundraising activities as appropriate; and may be asked to assist with technical and programming issues.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or 3 years of experience with reporting or professional writing;
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
- Knowledge of legal and ethical aspects of news reporting; good news and public affairs judgment; and ability to maintain objectivity and fairness in reporting and public affairs programming;
- Competence with computers, word-processing, spreadsheets, sound editing software, website editing, and social media communications;
- Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with KTNA news team and other staff;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to anticipate and manage workflow yet be able to switch priorities quickly when unexpected situations or community emergencies arise;
- Ability to work under deadline pressure with a minimum of supervision.
Other desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience include:
- Experience in public or commercial broadcasting and familiarity with broadcast equipment;
- General technical skills applicable to working with radio technology and an ability to readily learn and adapt to new media systems and technologies to best distribute local news coverage;
- Lived and worked in a rural setting.
Work Environment
The work of the position is based at the KTNA office in downtown Talkeetna. Hours are typically 9 to 5 with evenings and weekends occasionally required to cover community meetings and events and emergencies. Details

Communications & Development Coordinator Job Description
The Development Coordinator reports to the station’s General Manager and has primary responsibility for managing the organization’s membership program, program underwriting, and special events.
Position type: Part-time, non-exempt, 26 hours per week.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Membership
- Coordinate membership drives, maintain the membership/donor database, and maintain communication with members and donors.
- Maintain donor recognition program.
- Integrate the KTNA website and other Internet-based media into member/donor communications and fundraising.
- Manage donor thank you gifts and retail merchandise. Manage associated retail and wholesale sales.
- Integrate KTNA membership and donor programs into all events.
Underwriting
- Solicit cash and trade program underwriting support within the KTNA community.
- Negotiate new and renewing underwriting contracts for KTNA-FM and KTNA.org.
- Schedule underwriting announcements in program log.
- Schedule recording of underwriting announcements.
Special Events
- Develop and coordinate KTNA special events.
- Solicit resources to support station events.
And other duties as assigned as necessary.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant must have strong writing and speaking skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. The applicant must be comfortable with radio-broadcast, Internet-based (social media, website, e-mail), telephone, and written communication. Competence with computers and word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is essential. The applicant must be enthused about KTNA and the public radio mission and able to represent the organization effectively to the community and prospective donors. Prior experience in fundraising, management of member or donor programs, and event coordination is very desirable.
Other desirable knowledge, skills, and experience would include the following:
- Experience with public broadcasting.
- Database development and management specifically relevant to membership or donor databases.
- Experience working with MacIntosh and Microsoft computers and software.
- Website publication and management, particularly using WordPress.
- Graphic design.
- Experience utilizing social media for organizational communication and development.
- Design of marketing campaigns for nonprofit, retail, or other enterprises.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivation, ability to work independently and prioritize work load.
Work Environment:
The work of the position requires the employee to be present at the KTNA office in downtown Talkeetna. This role responds to incoming phone calls and welcomes visitors to the KTNA station.
