The feasibility study of the Alaska Long Trail, a proposed 500-mile path that stretches from Seward to Fairbanks, is underway. Alaska Trails, a local non-profit organization, proposed the project using a mix of existing and new paths. Public comments will play a big part in whether it moves forward for designation as a National Scenic Trail.
The Bureau of Land Management, or BLM, is tasked with handling the feasibility study. Funding is through the fiscal year 2023 federal omnibus bill. The BLM has held several in-person and virtual public meetings to provide a brief project outline and help residents understand how to submit meaningful comments.
BLM Public Affairs Specialist Charlie Ebbers says they are looking for comments about if and how the proposed trail might work. Currently just a concept, trail locations could change based on public comments.
Motorized trail users have so far dominated the public comments in the Upper Valley. The National Scenic Trail designation has traditionally been non-motorized and the areas selected are used by snowmachiners in winter. Ebbers says if the trail is accepted into the program, it may be designated as motorized through Congressional direction.
Since the trail spans multiple jurisdictions, the BLM will supply the funding to those land managers to help with maintenance if the trail is designated.
At this time, the BLM is looking for public comment to determine if this project is feasible. Comments for this phase are due by June 28th. The BLM will have another round of comments this winter.
