Borough Continues Junk Car Removal Program

Junk cars have been a hot topic in the Mat-Su Borough in the last few years. So much that the Borough has extended a popular junk car removal program through June 30th of next year. Or whenever it runs out of funds.

Up to three cars can be hauled from any one parcel in a fiscal year. The program applies to passenger cars and pickup trucks that don’t exceed 15,000 pounds.

The junk car program was so popular earlier this year that it ran out of funding in about six weeks. The original program paid a contractor up to $200 per vehicle to haul them. But many of the junk vehicles are located in more rural areas that cost more to haul. According to Mat-Su Borough Purchasing Director Russ Krafft, the new program does not have a per-vehicle cap. So property owners in rural areas will not have to pay the difference.

Krafft says the program is funded for $75,000 this fiscal year. The contractor will receive $174 per vehicle hauled. Owners should be sure the car has clear access before calling to arrange a pickup.

While there is a limit of three vehicles hauled per location, they can be dropped off free of charge to the contractor’s yard. It won’t go toward the three vehicle limit per parcel.
