Maxwell Sumner was appointed by the Mat-Su Borough Assembly to fill the District 4 seat vacated last month by Rob Yundt.
Four candidates applied for the seat. One dropped out due to a family emergency and three were interviewed at the Special Assembly meeting on October 3rd.
The candidates shared their experience and views during the interview phase on Wednesday night. Maxwell Sumner is a homebuilder alongside his brother, Jesse Sumner. Maxwell Sumner credits his brother for getting him interested in serving as an Assembly member. Jesse Sumner is a former Borough Assembly member and current Alaska State Representative.
Sumner says seeing both sides of an issue is the most important in serving as an Assembly member. During the interview, he notes that roads and schools are important, but governing in a way that creates the most good for the most people is what Assembly members should strive for.
Sumner says gas supply for our electrical needs is one of the top issues facing Borough residents. In addition, he says housing prices and shortages are an issue the younger generations are facing now.
Sumner’s term will end in November of 2025, when the seat is next up for election.
