The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced an emergency order for the Little Su River starting Friday.
The closure is for fishing for king salmon effective at 11 pm this Friday through Wednesday July 13th. The closure prohibits sport fishing for king salmon, including catch and release fishing. The area affected by the order includes all water of the Little Susitna from its confluence with Cook Inlet upstream to the Parks Highway bridge.
Harvest rates are below average and similar to the 2010 season. The harvest rate at this point is the lowest on record. Officials hope that by closing the fishery , the anticipated harvest will be reduced by 35 to 40%, therefore providing greater potential for achieving escapement goals.
