The Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) presented 27 renewable energy projects for potential funding for the fiscal year beginning in July.
The AEA presented the projects to the Renewable Energy Fund Advisory Committee (REFAC), who unanimously approved and submitted all projects to the state legislature for funding. To date, 271 grants have been awarded, with more than 100 constructed and in operation.
Grant funds for the projects come from the Renewable Energy Fund. Since 2008 the Fund has supported projects with about $300 million, with an additional $250 million in matching funds.
Two projects in the Mat-Su Valley were recommended for funding. Matanuska Electric Association requested $1.83 million for a railbelt wind feasibility study and conceptual design. Alaska Renewables, LLC, requested $2 million for final design and permitting of utility scale wind in the railbelt area.
The total funding request of all proposed projects for the next fiscal year is $25.25 million. The state legislature will determine which projects are ultimately funded.
