Alaska has the highest Chalmydia infection rates in the country for the last two years, according to the state department of health and social services office of epidemiology. There were 5,813 cases of chlamydia in 2011, which was a 5 percent decrease from 2010 – the largest decrease ever reported in one year.
Alaska’s racial and ethnic minority populations, women, young adults and those living in northern and southwest regions are disproportionately affected. 84 percent of cases reported in 2011 were for people under the age of 30, sixty percent were females, and 48 percent were among Alaska Natives.
