Alaska Railroad trains are traveling north of Talkeetna again after an ice jam shut down the tracks over the weekend.
On Saturday, rail service was halted after ice and water backed up onto the tracks near Curry. The ice jam released late Saturday, and crews got to work getting the railroad back in operation.
According to a statement on Monday, the high water scoured away ballast near the tracks, and large chunks of ice moved a portion of the rail off its bed up to twenty-five feet.
After making repairs early in the week, freight trains began running north of Talkeetna late on Tuesday. Passenger service resumed with the first Denali Star train of the season. The Denali Star carries many of the visitors that come through Talkeetna on their way to Denali.
