Anglers contend with high waters during early season fishing

Water levels have risen again on the Three rivers in the Northern Susitna Valley. The jump in mid-week temperatures, along with a bit of rain, has swollen the banks of the Talkeetna River, and this has some fishermen looking elsewhere for angling.The National Weather Services River Height Gauge on the Talkeetna River at the Railroad Bridge show levels rising from an early-week low of 6-point-five feet on June First, up to 8-point-five feet on Thursday Afternoon. The River is still several feet below flood stage of 12-and-a-half-feet, but projections suggest the Talkeetna river will continue to rise for the next couple of days.

The Susitna river has gone up as well, measurements taken at Gold Creek show the river has risen 2 and a half feet since June 2nd.

An area sportfishing guide, who asked to remain un-named, has taken his boats south. He says that Kings are being caught in Deshka, but the river traffic is bumper-to-bumper with boats. The Deshka Weir, managed by the Department of  Fish and Game has counted between 21 and 107 fish a day since June 1st.

In other waters, fishing has been slow for trout at Montana Creek and Sheep Creek.
