The Mat-Su Borough Assembly will discuss police powers at a special meeting on Tuesday.
While the assembly does not hold regular meetings in July, special meetings are sometimes called. For this week’s meeting, assembly members will decide whether to put an advisory vote on the October ballot regarding police in the borough.
Currently, the Mat-Su Borough is not able to establish a police force or contract with existing law enforcement agencies. The advisory vote language, as written, reads that the cost of a police force would be around $300 per year for every $100,000 in property value.
If the question goes onto the ballot, the result is not binding, and the assembly would then decide what to do after hearing the opinion of voters.
