The Borough Assembly has an ordinance in front of them tonight that would accept the state grant that appropriates money for Su Valley High School construction. The ordinance also appropriates the insurance proceeds, almost $16,500. It also takes over a million dollars from the Boroughs site selection reserve fund to pay the state the required 30% match.
The Borough Assembly received notice two weeks ago that the insurance company had finally settled on an agreement from the fire that destroyed the school in 2007. Manager John Duffy said at least one of the arguments was over the concrete foundation. After the fire, the Borough inspection said that the slab from the previous school was unfit to be used as the new school slab. The insurance company disagreed and in the end the insurance company won that fight. Part of the 30% the Borough is paying is the full cost of the new concrete foundation that was installed last year.
However, the amount from the insurance was agreeable and even a bit higher than originally expected.
Duffy says the school is under warranty. If something didn’t get installed as it should have or perhaps got broken in the move-in, it needs to get on the list to get fixed. Normal wear and tear is not covered.
The ordinance is introduced tonight. The Assembly is set to discuss the details and vote on the ordinance at their next meeting on April 6th.
