About $113,000 in grant funding from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation aims to educate landowners adjacent to water bodies. The Mat-Su Borough Assembly accepted the grant at their last meeting with the intent of addressing non-point source pollution, or pollution that can’t be tracked to a specific source.
Borough Planning and Land Use Deputy Director Jason Ortiz says this education effort is meant to support better water quality in the Borough.
“People just don’t know what the rules are. This is going to try to help bridge that gap so that we have safer water quality.”
Ortiz says the Borough has received lots of responses from the request for proposals. The organization that is selected to handle the work will help build a website and create education materials for residents.
“We’re fortunate that there’s a lot of people that want to step up and do this. And right now we’re in the process of reviewing the submissions with an internal group.”
Ortiz expects a contractor to be selected with a proposed project outline by mid-June.
