Caswell Area Road Projects Nearly Complete

Major road work that began this spring on Hidden Hills and Caswell Lakes roads in the Caswell Lakes area is now mostly complete, save for a few punchlist items, according to Caswell Lakes Road Service Area Chair DJ McBride.

Hidden Hills Road is the only major egress route for the neighborhood, with an estimated population of 1,400 residents. McBride says that the road was a mess because it was pioneered-in many years ago and paving it was the best way to ensure that it would remain in good condition for years to come. 

A fish passage was also added to Hidden Hills Road, the last one needed on Borough Roads in the Caswell Lakes RSA. Fish passages form archways that better allow fish to swim through them than a round culvert would.  

The contractor also added paved pullouts for the mailboxes along Caswell Lakes Road. Railings have been installed for those boxes. McBride says if residents want their box to be included, to put it on the rails. 

This major paving project was approved by Mat-Su Borough voters as an area-wide project. Smaller projects can be funded through the RSA’s budget. 

Several of those small projects will also be completed this summer. These mostly include ditching the intersection of Hidden Hills and Bendapole roads. In addition, ditches will be added to Montana Creek Road near the boggy area in hopes that it won’t overtake the road during break-up. McBride says they will evaluate how well the ditching works next spring. She goes on to say that culverts may be needed in some areas if the ditching isn’t enough. 

McBride says the RSA Board will introduce the RIP, or road improvement project, list at their meeting Monday evening. The public will have a chance to weigh in at that time. She says they’ll vote on the projects at their October meeting.
