Crowley Classic Basketball Tourney lights up Su Valley

Three days of basketball will close out the reguar season for the Su Valley boys and girls Varsity Basketball teams. The actionstarted Thursday night, and Lorien Nettleton has the story.

The Su Valley Rams are hosting their premier basketball event of the season. The 2012 Crowley Classic Basketball tournament got underway at last night. Five teams have traveled to Su Valley for the final tournament of the season, with teams from Wasilla Lake, Lumen Christi, Nenana, Tok, and Aniak.

Cierra Pederson helped lead the girls team to an 18-point win over Wasilla Lake on Thursday night, with a score of 38 to 20. The senior point guard is completing a 4-year run with the Rams, and after a season of traveling to away games, she’s excited about the chance to finish her varsity career in front of a home crowd.

The Su Valley Boys Coach Mike Mathews gave the team freedom to play a fast break style of play, leading to a 68 to 34 blowout over an  under-powered Wasilla Lake team.

Both boys and girls teams are looking to tonight’s games against Aniak to be tough contests. This will be their first time meeting Aniak this season, but last year the Su Valley Girls narrowly beat Aniak to win the Crowley Classic, and The boys lost a close game to Aniak, who later went to win the 1-A State Championships.

Sophomore Stone Krueger says the Aniak team could be the one to beat.

Four games take place this afternoon and evening, and Su Valley Girls kick off a prime-time series against anaik at 6:30, with the boys game against Anaik to follow at 8pm.
