The statewide deadline for removing studded tires from vehicles is this Saturday, May 1.
The Department of Public Safety had extended the deadline for the studded tire season from April 15 to May 1 because of poor road conditions on the Kenai Peninsula. The extension was intended to give all motorists an additional margin of safety on lingering winter roads.
However, May 1 is the deadline to have completed that tire changeover from studded to normal tires. Troopers warn that driving with studded tires after Saturday can result in a ticket with up to a $50 fine.
