Alaska State Troopers responded to a report of a deceased person in a residential fire located on South Dogsled Drive. The property owner called MatCom Dispatch at 1:20 am and the Troopers responded a little before 3 am Tuesday.
Alaska Department of Public Safety Information Officer Tim DeSpain confirmed the residence is located on South Dogsled Drive in Talkeetna on the same property where the Montana Creek Fire originated on Saturday. He says the two incidents are completely separate.
The property owner is staying in an RV while building another cabin on the site. Multiple people are living on the property. The Alaska State Trooper Dispatch reports that the identity of the deceased individual is unknown at this time.
DeSpain says the structure was a small cabin with no power or water. The entire structure was consumed by the fire.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office responded and the body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death and positive identification. DeSpain says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
This article was updated on July 3 to reflect additional information from the Alaska Department of Public Safety, who clarified that there were multiple people living on site and that the property owner called 911.
