The Denali Highway was closed to through traffic Monday afternoon at Mile 104. Alaska Department of Transportation spokesperson Hannah Blankenship explains why the road between Cantwell and Paxson was shut down.
“We closed the Susitna River bridge on the east (Paxson) side because of some erosion. Our crews went out this morning and discovered it and reported back this afternoon. Right now, we don’t know what kind erosion it was that caused the damage, but our crews are assessing and we will let the public know when we know more.”
Traffic is still able to travel on the Denali Highway up until the bridge. There is currently not a timeframe for when the bridge can be expected to open again. Blankenship says that the public can call 511 for any updates throughout the evening.
