Denali National Park and Preserve closed the Park Road for the winter at mile 3 on Friday. Last week’s storms have covered the road beyond the Park’s headquarters with significant amounts of snow.
Also, construction at the new rest area east of the Savage River campground has ended for the season. To get ready for winter enthusiasts, the park has established a winter trailhead at the headquarters’ gate and the parking is available. But for now, there is not enough snow on the ground for recreational activities such as snowshoeing, skiing or mushing. The Bear Loop of the Riley Creek Campground at mile point two is open for camping, but the water has been turned off for the season. Water is available for campers at the Murie Science Center. Before traveling, visitors should call for updated conditions and weather information.
