As of Thursday, May 13th, there were 809 climbers registered to attempt Denali with ninety-four currently on the mountain. One attempt has been completed, with no summits reported, yet. Thirty climbers are registered to attempt Mt. Foraker, with twelve climbs currently underway. No attempts of Mt. Foraker have been completed, yet.
This week on the Denali Report, we’re revisiting the same conversation I had with Denali South District Ranger Tucker Chenoweth last week. In addition to talking about preparations for the 2021 climbing season, the interview took place just a few days after a search and rescue operation. That led to a discussion about how technology, specifically GPS-based communication devices, have evolved in recent years, and how that effects search and rescue operations.
