The Alaska Division of Forestry has unveiled the new face of statewide fire prevention, and now wants the public’s help to give it a name.
The state’s new fire prevention campaign, titled “Take Time to Learn Before You Burn” comes after the state legislature passed House Bill 355 two years ago. The updated law changes penalties associated with illegal burning and is aimed at reducing human-caused wildfires.
Created with help from the U.S. Forest Service, the initiative hopes to reduce human-caused wildfires in Alaska by ten percent per year.
The prevention program’s logo features a cartoon moose, and the Division of Forestry is looking to Alaskans to help name it. Individuals and groups may submit suggested names. Five finalists will be chosen for an online vote, which will happen in September.
Submissions can be sent to DNR.DOF.prevention@Alaska.gov.
