The Dept of Transportation is starting the public comment period on the environmental process for improvements at milepost 44 to milepost 52 of the George Parks Highway.
The area is between Wasilla and the turnoff to Big Lake. That stretch of highway has one of the highest death and accident tallies in the state. DOT has hired Hattenburg Dilley and Linnell to complete the Environmental Assessment and collect comments.
Alternatives include a possible 4-lane highway, moose mitigation, pedestrian facilities, phased in construction considerations and other alternatives.
Wetlands, invasive plants, hazardous waste sites, water quality and other environmental consequences have been taken into consideration.
A public hearing is currently scheduled in Wasilla on August 17th. Residents can submit written comments or attend the hearing in person.
