Final Borough Election Results

The results of the Mat-Su Borough Elections have been finalized.  The ending tally resulted in two new members of both the Borough Assembly and School Board.  Three of those new members unseated incumbents to win their seats, including Talkeetna resident Donna Dearman, who defeated Neal Lacy and two other challengers to win the School Board race for Seat F.

For Seat F, Donna Dearman received a total of two thousand, eight hundred and eighty-nine (2,889) votes.  Incumbent Neal Lacy finished second with two thousand, six hundred and ninety-four (2,694) votes.  Stephen Jacobson finished with two thousand, two hundred and two (2,202) votes, and Jim Tapley received one thousand, six hundred and thirty-four votes.

For Seat G, challenger Ray Michaelson defeated David Cheezem, who was appointed to the School Board to fill a vacancy earlier this year.  Michaelson received five thousand, one hundred and eighty-three (5,183) votes, and Cheezem received four thousand, three hundred and ninety-one (4,391).  Seat C was unopposed, and current School Board President Susan Pougher received seven thousand, eight hundred and twenty-two votes.

In the Borough Assembly races, District 2 incumbent Noel Woods was defeated by challenger Matthew Beck.  After correction of a clerical error took Beck’s lead from one hundred and twenty-three to twenty-three votes, absentee ballots expanded his margin of victory.  In the end, he received eight hundred and seventy-one (871) votes to Woods’ eight hundred and ten (810).

There was no incumbent for the District 1 seat, as Warren Keogh elected not to run for re-election.  In the end, Jim Sykes won the seat with a total of one thousand, one hundred and twelve votes to Doug Glenn’s one thousand and forty-three.

The Borough Assembly met at five o’clock on Tuesday to certify the results, and the new Assembly and School Board members were sworn in.
