Fish and Game allows salmon fishing on Larson Creek again

With sockeye salmon numbers now projected to achieve the escapement goal at Larson Creek, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has re-opened the fishery and is allowing the retention of sockeye salmon on Larson Creek.

Less than two weeks ago, Fish and Game closed the fishery with only 1,700 fish passing the weir by the beginning of August.  The sustainable escapement goal for sockeye on Larson Creek starts at 15,000 fish.

Since then the fishery has rebounded. According to Assistant Area Management Biologist Sam Oslund, “As of Thursday, August 12, a total of 13,033 sockeye salmon have passed the weir and the sustainable escapement goal is projected to be achieved.”

The new order becomes effective at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14 and remains through 11:59 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2021.

Anglers are reminded that the bag and possession limit is three salmon, of which no more than two per day, and two in possession, may be coho salmon.
