The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is ending sport fishing for all salmon species in a popular stream in the Northern Susitna Valley.
Effective Thursday, Larson Creek will be closed for salmon due to low returns. The sustainable minimum return for sockeye salmon in Larson Creek is 15,000 fish. According to Fish and Game, fewer than 3,000 sockeye have been counted at the weir on the creek as of Monday. Area Management Biologist Sam Ivey says that is the lowest count for this time of year on record.
The emergency closure applies to all of Larson Creek and within a quarter-mile radius of its confluence with the Talkeetna River.
