Flooding along Willow Creek prompts evacuations

3:00 pm The borough is advising that anyone on the north side of the Deneki Bridge who wants to leave the area over the next few days should do so now, because it will become “impassable to vehicle traffic for the next few days until the situation stabilizes or mechanical work can be completed to clear the water off the roads.” Call 911 if you need assistance to evacuate.

1:00 pm If residents in the affected area need assistance to evacuate themselves and animals, the borough says to call 911. They need to provide their location and the number of persons and animals that need to be evacuated. The Water Rescue team will assist them.

10 am Here’s an update on the flooding along Willow Creek. Three homes have evacuated, and the Willow Community Center remains open.

6:40 am Press release from Mat-Su Borough December 22, 2019

On December 21, 2019 at approximately 2300 hours, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Department of Emergency Services responded to the Friday Subdivision in Willow, AK on reports to flooding from Willow Creek in that area. Willow Fire Department, Alaska State Troopers, and the Mat-Su Water Rescue team responded to assess for injuries and damage. Those living in the area West of the Deneki Bridge are being evacuated.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter at the Willow Community Center, 23625 W Willow Community Circle, Willow, AK for persons unable to remain in their homes. No injuries have been reported.

Emergency personnel are still on scene assessing the situation and assisting residents to evacuate. The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Department of Emergency Services will provide updates as the situation changes.
