Hikers Rescued From Stampede Trail

On Wednesday, the Alaska State Troopers reported a search and rescue operation that occurred last week on the Stampede Trail near Healy.  On Wednesday, August 6th, a Wisconsin woman called troopers to report that she had received a distress message from a SPOT locator near the intersection of the Stampede Trail and the Teklanika River. The Tri-Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded with ATVs from Healy and located the party of Matthew Peot, Thomas Young, and Kenneth Young.

Troopers say that Thomas Young was injured when he tripped and fell while carrying an ax.  The Tri-Valley volunteers gave the three hikers a ride out of the area.

The Stampede Trail is the route to the abandoned bus that served as a temporary home for Christopher McCandless, the subject of the book and film, Into the Wild.
