Huskies siezed by Animal Care upgraded from Critical to Serious

12 Huskies seized from a Montana creek home on March 15th have been upgraded from critical condition to serious condition. Mat-Su Animal Care Manager Phil Morgan says the dogs are being monitored by the medical staff here at the animal shelter and due to their initial incoming condition. Morgan suspects it will be a slow and long recovery process for the dogs to regain health.

Veterenarians are examining the dogs to determine the cause of their condition, and Morgan the department is moving cautiously to make sure they identify why the dogs were in such bad shape.

Officers were alerted to the situation through an anonymous tip, and Morgan says it wasn’t the first time this group of dogs had been in trouble.

The investigation is still ongoing, but should the dogs’ condition be caused by neglect on the part of the owner, it would amount to 12 misdemeanors. Morgan says he gave testimony last week at a hearing on Bill 179, which would make failing to care for five or more animals in a single continuous episode a class C Felony.

Morgan emphasized that Borough Residents who find themselves unable to care for or feed their animals are always encouraged to contact Animal Care for assistance. The shelter has supplies of donated pet food and Morgan says he would always help prevent a problem before it becomes a case of serious negligence.
