The third fatal wreck in southcentral Alaska in one week occurred over the weekend. The Alaska state Troopers have issued a formal statement asking motorists to be cautious as the roads turn icy. Road conditions appear to have been a factor in each of the accidents.
A crash on the Kenai Pennisula killed a Wasilla couple Saturday morning. A semi tractor headed northbound crossed the center line and crashed head on with a car driven by Paul Trissell of Wasilla. He and his wife were both killed.
On Friday, a tractor trailer overturned near milepost 177 of the Parks Highway and spilled 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel. No one was injured, but icy road conditions were cited as one of the reasons for the crash.
On Thursday, there was a crash on Big Lake Road. Wasilla resident Edward Irish was killed in that crash.
On Tuesday, a crash on the Kenai Spur Highway killed a 14 year old girl riding as a passenger in an SUV.
Authorities urge drivers to slow down, be wary of snow, ice and slush and drive defensively.
Snow is falling heavily in Anchorage today and authorities reported that by 9 a.m. 54 vehicles had gone into the ditch or become stuck. There have been 34 non-injury accidents.
