Talkeetna Republican Ryan Sheldon is advancing to the General Election on Nov. 3. He’s the only candidate from the community running to represent Alaska Senate District O.

He’s running against incumbent Republican George Rauscher and Democrat Peter Bauer.

He says he wanted to run because he thinks more young people should be in office. He also adds that he felt disappointed after a trip to Juneau last year, where he believes current members of the Alaska Legislature acted in their own personal interests.

Sheldon sees two issues in his district: the high cost of living and mismanaged school funding.

He says one concern is that, as winter approaches, community members will again face high fuel costs, and he feels it's crucial to address energy issues. One solution he would to consider is a hydro project, especially on smaller waterways.

Sheldon also would work to restructure the school district’s current funding formula. He hopes this would strengthen administrative efficiency, as well as funding accountability.
