Martin retires as superintendent

Steve Martin, former Denali National Park and Preserve superintendent, has announced his retirement from the Park Service.

Martin spent 7 years at Denali as superintendent from 1994 to early 2002.  He was also superintendent of Gates of the Arctic National Park, superintendent of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and most recently, was Superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park.  After working in Denali he spent 2 years as Deputy Director of NPS in Washington DC, supervising 390 park units and a 2.2 billion dollar budget.  For a short time he was regional director of the Intermountain Region parks.

His 35-year career in the park service began as a backcountry ranger on the Colorado River after receiving a degree in resource management in 1975.

While at Denali National Park, he worked through the revisions of the Denali Backcountry Management Plan, which were finalized after his tenure.  He was instrumental in organizing the development of the frontcountry development plan, including the multi-million dollar visitor center. He was well regarded by staff at the Talkeetna Ranger Station.  It was during his tenure that the new mountaineering station became operational.

His retirement is effective January 1^st.
