Mat Su Borough Assembly upholds veto

The Mat Su Borough Assembly met Tuesday night and argued for an hour on whether or not they should override the mayor’s veto on a resolution that would place restrictions on past employees from providing future services to the Borough.

Over a month ago, the Assembly passed the ordinance that says no past Borough employee can act as a contractor for the Borough offices in the future.  The ordinance, introduced by Assembly member Jim Colver, came soon after Manager John Duffy submitted his resignation papers.

Mayor Colberg vetoed the ordinance and the Assembly had it on their agenda to override.  After discussion on all sides, the Assembly did not override the veto and the ordinance is void.

In other moves, the Assembly approved a forty thousand dollar grant from Homeland Security for the Caswell Fire Service Area for protective gear.

The Assembly also approved a contract amendment for Frawner Corporation to install the Talkeetna arsenic treatment system.  Frawner is the builder, supplier and contractor for the system.  The contract has been amended to permit the company to install a new sewer line at the same time as the treatment installation.  The new line is a requirement by D-E-C that will allow a weekly flush of the system to occur.

At the beginning of the Assembly meeting, Borough Attorney Nicholas Spiropoulos  announced that he was NOT the Nicolas Spiropolos of Anchorage that had been arrested in Fairbanks on DUI charges.  A Trooper posting had resulted in a barrage of accusations.  Even though it seems odd that there would be two men with the same unusual Greek name, the attorney declared he was older than the accused, the name was spelled differently and he had NOT been to Fairbanks.
