Mat-Su Canvassing Board begins counting absentee ballots

In total, more than 2,000 absentee ballots were issued. As of Thursday, nearly 1,900 have been returned for counting. The canvassing board is also verifying poll numbers from Tuesday’s in-person voting. They will report any corrections made on the night of October 16^th, when the election is scheduled to be certified by the Mat-Su Borough Assembly.

As the numbers currently stand, the largest margin of victory in the election goes to Borough Mayor Vern Halter. Halter says he is somewhat surprised that all three ballot propositions appear to have passed.

Halter says the most surprising result was the advisory vote on police powers. Mayor Halter says the next step in looking into police powers will likely be setting up a committee made up of assembly members, borough staff, and members of the public.

In the District 7 assembly race, Mayor Halter says he is happy that Tam Boeve of Willow appears to have won.
