Mat-Su shows highest single-day COVID-19 case count since March

The Mat-Su Borough has reported its highest day for new cases of COVID-19 in almost five months.

Wednesday’s new cases in the borough totaled ninety-four.  That is the most in a single day since March 25th, according to the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services COVID-19 dashboard.

The dashboard also shows that fifteen percent of the people hospitalized in the Mat-Su have COVID-19, and all but two of the ICU beds in the borough are occupied.

School started in the Mat-Su on Wednesday, and the district is tracking cases at various campuses.  As of Thursday’s update, there have been twenty-eight positive tests for COVID-19 since students returned to school. Redington Jr/Sr High topped the list with eight cases.  None of the cases reported thus far were in Northern Susitna Valley Schools.  Masks are currently encouraged, but optional, in Valley schools, though that could change if individual campuses show signs of a significant COVID-19 outbreak.
