Shawn Mitchell, who was reported missing on the evening of March 12th, was found deceased on March 14th near the Chase Trailhead.
Based on an Alaska State Troopers Dispatch, Mitchell was expected on a flight from Anchorage to Texas. His bags were packed for the trip, however, he never checked in for that Sunday flight. AST Public Information Officer Tim DeSpain states that Mitchell was last heard from at about 3 p.m. on March 12th.
Troopers were able to track Mitchell’s cell phone to the Talkeetna area, where they located his vehicle at the trailhead, but were unable to locate him. The search was stopped that evening due to weather conditions.
Troopers resumed the search on Tuesday, March 14 with assistance from MATSAR Search and Rescue. However, it was a passerby that reported to Troopers a deceased person near the trail.
Troopers were able to identify the individual as Shawn Mitchell and his next of kin have been notified. DeSpain says that no foul play is suspected in Mitchell’s death and that his body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office.
