Residents of downtown and East Talkeetna recently received a flyer detailing proposed rate changes to their sewer and water rates.

The Talkeetna Sewer and Water Advisory Board is proposing the new rate structure, in an attempt make the system more equitable to both residents and businesses.

Whitney Wolff presented the proposal and the reasons for the new rate structure to the Talkeetna Community Council at their regularly scheduled meeting Monday night.

“For years, I know, lots of people have complained that the rates were inequitable.  This is a pay-for-what-you-use rate system, so we’ve proposed to drop the residential and commercial base rates to a really low number.  It also waives the commercial and residential distinctions.  In the past few years, between Air BnB and some other stuff, the  nuances between commercial and residential have gotten really muddy.  This would eliminate that and sort of put everybody on the same playing field of paying for what they use.”

The Sewer and Water Advisory Board is actively seeking public comment on the new rate structure.  The public can comment by emailing the Borough Operations and Maintenance Division Manager, Jim Jenson, at TalkeetnaSewerandWater@matsugov.us.

If the proposed rate changes are well received, the revised rate structure will be presented to the Mat-Su Assembly for adoption.
