The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will hold an open house next week to unveil and discuss plans for an alternative highway route through part of the Mat-Su Borough.
DOT says continued population growth in the Valley has resulted in an increase in traffic congestion in some areas. The current project, which is called the Parks Highway Alternative Corridor, aims to reduce that congestion going forward.
The open house, which will be held on December 8th at the Wasilla Library, comes after a study period. The area studied stretches from Hawk Lane in Houston to Hyer Road in Wasilla.
The project is still in its early planning phases. Justin Shelby, Administrative Operations Manager for DOT’s Central Region, says the goal of the open house is to gather public input on the project as it moves forward. Another public meeting is set to take place during the next phase of the project in the spring.
For those who cannot attend the open house in person, an online option is available. More information on the project, including meeting details, is available at ParksHighwayAlternative.com.
