Rainy Fourth of July Doesn't Deter Visitors

It was a damp Fourth of July in Talkeetna, but that didn’t stop hundreds from packing downtown for the festivities.  The annual parade kicked off at noon with a VFW color guard followed by a stream of trucks and ATVs pulling flatbed floats from various local businesses and groups, and was capped off by vehicles from the volunteer fire department and EMS.  The drizzle tapered off just in time for the parade to start, and picked up again shortly after the convoy left Main Street.

After the parade, the annual moose auction was held.  The auction benefits the Talkeetna Historical Society, Denali Arts Council, and Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce.  Individuals and businesses decorated wooden moose cut-outs and donated them for the auction.   Despite the rain in the Village Park, some individual items raised as much as $500, and the auction raised over $5,000 dollars in total for the local non-profits.

The afternoon and evening were filled with live music at various local venues and a festive atmosphere to celebrate America’s 237th birthday.
